Bohm, Karl


(1894-1981), Austrian conductor, studied music theory in Vienna, made his conducting debut at Graz Opera in 1917; in 1920, became chief conductor there, served as music director in Darmstadt, Dresden Staatsoper, began a lifelong association with the Salzburg Festival in 1938, named director of the Vienna State Opera, 1942, and 1954-56; conducted in London, La Scala, NY Met, Chicago Symphony, also conducted at Bayreuth, and Covent Garden.
